STANDARD GAUGE FEATURES OF COATING THICKNESS METER

A coating thickness gauge is also called as a paint meter which is often used for measuring the dry film thickness. Measuring the dry thickness is one of the most difficult processes of measuring in the industry of coating because of its effect on the process of coating, quality, and cost. This device is used for measuring and evaluating a coating’s life expectancy, appearance and functionality of the product and assures compliance with the International Standards.
The dry film thickness is measured with the help of two processes, first is the destructive thickness method and the second is the non-destructive thickness method.
Under the destructive thickness method, the coating is cut to the basic with the help of a cutter. Under the non-destructive method of coating those techniques of measurements are used which are non-destructive, do not destroy the coating or the basic part and the current thickness measurement methods.
The method of measuring the thickness can be done either with the help of magnetic steel surface or nonmagnetic metal surfaces like stainless steel or even the aluminium. The coating thickness gauges which are digital are considered ideal for measuring the thickness of the coating on metallic parts. For non-magnetic coatings on surfaces like ferrous substrates like steel, the process of Electromagnetic induction is used. Whereas for non-conducive coatings of substrates made of non-metals, the principle of eddy current is used. There are various ranges of coating thickness gauges that are used for measuring the dry film thickness.
The vast range of non-destructive thickness gauges of the coating is inclusive of the mechanical and digital coating thickness gauges which are suitable for a dry film testing. It is considered complete with a vast range of probes, and amount foils that suits the application in the best possible way.
An enduring and permanent magnet is fixed on a balanced arm and the force which is required for pulling this magnet from the surface is a measure of the thickness of the coating. A helical spring is attached to the arm which provides balance. This arm applies force at one end, and to the scale at the other end. When the scale wheel is turned, the force increases gradually till the time the magnet is not lifted from the surface. The scale is drawn in the units of thickness and not force.
