APPLICATION OF MAGNETIC EXTENSOMETER IN EXCAVATIONS
The magnetic extensometer is a
system which is used for examining the settlement and heave in foundations,
digging and barriers. Settlement occurs at the depth or the position and is
identified there. It is there only where the settlement is measured.
The soil extensometer incorporates magnetic targets that are placed so that they can move freely outside
the access case or inclinometer case which is flush joined. The 3 or 6 Leaf
Spider, magnetic settlement plates or magnetic joints can be the targets.
The relative position of the
magnetic targets is used for measuring the settlement. This is done by using a
Reed Switch Probe which helps in identifying the magnets which are lowered down
through the central access casing.
Features
This device helps in the total and
the progressive settlements too. The Following are the characteristics of a
magnetic extensometer that are used in the task of excavation.
Convenient handling
As an alternative to the measuring
tape, the magnet extensometer uses a graduated cable which is very easy and
convenient for handling. It also winds up very easily. The diameter of the
cable is 3.5 mm or 0.125”. It has a pair of steel conductors for the better
stability of the dimension. The cable jacket is made up of polyurethane which
is extremely flexible and has very high resistance power against abrasion. A laser marks the graduation on the cable
jacket. These are durable just like the cable jacket is.
Precision
The readings are repeated to +/-3 mm
or +/- 0.1 inches. By constructing a reference stand that comprises a Vernier
dial gauge, a great level of precision can be achieved.
Application
The magnet extensometer is used for
examining the settlement and heave in the digging, foundations, dams, and
embankments. This device can also be fixed at the back of the retaining
structures like sheet piles and slurry walls, over the ground openings like
tunnels and shafts. Information from the device can be used for signifying the
depths at which the settlement has occurred and even the total amount of
settlement is recorded through this device.
Installed components
The components which are already installed
in the device are access pipe, datum magnet, spider magnet, plate magnet and
various telescoping sections.
The datum magnet is located at the
end of the tube which sets a benchmark. Measurement of all the other anchors is
provided to those benchmarks for the calculation of the absolute settlement of
every anchor point.
