Soil testing is
conducted to determine a particular soil's suitability for a construction
project. Testing can be used to classify the soil and provide crucial
information whether the soil possesses the integrity and the properties that
are necessary to keep a structure stable. Soil testing is used in most
construction projects including roadwork. Here are five soil testing-related
trends you should consider for the most common applications:
- Plate
load test – This test is commonly done at the foundation
level of the soil. It is usually done according to local standards and
specification to determine the soil's bearing capacity.
- The
use of CBR test machines – The California bearing ratio test
measures the strength of re-compacted sample of highway sub base, subgrade
soil, and the subgrade using a penetration test. It is usually ideal for
testing cohesive materials that have a particle size of less than 19mm.
- Soil
triaxial test systems – These tests are crucial for
determining the soil's mechanical properties when designing structures
like embankments and foundations. Tunnelling, building construction,
excavations, and other similar applications will have many different
effects on subsoil, and the effects can be simulated with triaxial tests.
This testing system investigates the stress-strain relation of an
undisturbed soil specimen by subjecting the sample to various drainage
conditions and different stress levels.
- The
use of a front loading oedometer – Soil testing
with a front loading oedometer can determine the consolidation attributes
of low-permeability soils using a one-dimensional consolidation test. The
test is done on samples from undisturbed soils, or on compacted disturbed
samples. You can estimate the foundation's behaviour under load using the
data collected from the test. Knowledge of the soil's loading history and
classification data is crucial for making proper estimates.
- Soil moisture tester – A carbide meter is a universal soil moisture tester that uses calcium carbide to determine the soil's moisture content. A sample is placed in a bottle with a reagent. Water should react with calcium carbide and create a gas pressure, which the manometer displays and converts into the percentage of moisture.
