Features of VW Piezometer
Pore water pressure is measured in the soil, earth/rockfill foundations, and concrete structures using a vibrating wire piezometer.
The quantity and circulation pattern of groundwater
are determined by measuring pore water pressure. It is also used to estimate
how water flows in earth/rockfill & concrete dams the soil or rock's
load-bearing capacity.
The VW
piezometer is
used to measure positive or negative pore pressure in the soil, concrete, or
rock for construction control, stability analysis, and monitoring of earth
dams, embankments, foundations, shallow subsurface works, and surface
excavations as well as foundations, embankments, abutments, and fills. It is
also used to uplift pore pressure gradients and water supply operations,
groundwater elevation study, and hydrological inquiry.
How does it operate?
A magnetic, high tensile strength, stretched wire
makes up the vibrating wire piezometer. The one end of this wire is tied to a
diaphragm that deflects under the applied pressure. With a change in pressure,
the diaphragm deflects and correspondingly affects the wire tension.
As a result, every variation in pore water pressure
is reflected in the stretched wire's tension. A coil magnet plucks the
high-tensile-strength wire, which resonates at a frequency proportionate to its
tension. The wire's resonant frequency causes an alternating current to flow in
the coil magnet. The pore pressure is proportional to the frequency squared,
and the Encardio-rite type EDI-51V readout logger displays this in engineering
units.
Features of a VW
Piezometer
- Long-term consistency in performance
- Rugged and appropriate for harsh conditions
- High precision
- Long wire lengths are unaffected
- Customer-specified threaded adaptors are available for all
non-drive-in models.
VW
Piezometers come
in various capacities and are utilised in many situations. In all types of
piezometers, the thermistor checks the temperature and may even make a
temperature adjustment in the zero reading. Inside the transducer enclosure is
a tri-polar plasma surge arrestor that safeguards the vibrating wire pluck and
read coils from electrical transients caused by direct or indirect lightning
strikes.
