Points To Remember Before Performing Concrete Compression Test

In construction, a concrete compression test is performed to determine the compressive strength of a concrete slab. This implies the concrete body's ability to withstand compression without cracking or causing fractures on its surface or in its core. A push force is applied from both sides to assess its strength and ability to withstand the amount of compression without failing.

The compressive strength of concrete is instilled by its constituent components, i.e., sand, cement, and comprehensive materials. The quality of the individual components combined with the water-cement ratio, curing techniques, temperature properties, and proportions of air and components determines the concrete's overall strength.

Here are a few points to keep in mind before performing a concrete compression test:

  • The ratio of concrete and water mixture should be optimum to strengthen the concrete up to 90% by day 14.
  • There should be no excess water in the concrete because when the water dries, it leaves tenuous gaps among the cement grains and its mixing components, thereby weakening the structure.
  • The increased size of aggregates may provide a reading of greater strength in the initial phases, but they begin to weaken the structure from the inside over time.
  • Air entrainment is necessary to create strong concrete structures that can withstand varying temperatures.
  • The concrete mix should not be rotated for more than two minutes.

A concrete compression test is performed at intervals of one day, seven days, ten days, and 14 days. Although concrete reaches its full strength only after 28 days, by day 14, it displays 90 percent of its estimated strength to provide the green light for the continuation of the project. However, it is still observed critically on day 21 and day 28 to determine the ability to meet its complete target strength.

Concrete is used widely to build foundations as well as in structural implementation. If the concrete is weak, it may cause fissures or critical gaps. The concrete compression test is used to ensure a solid concrete structure.
