How to perform CBR test in the best way?

A CBR test or the California Bearing Ratio test is a form of penetration assessment to gauge the subgrade levels of roads and pavements. These kinds of structures, strength is crucial, and the CBR test helps to maintain them to avoid casualties. The strength of the structure is measured by evaluating the pressure required to infiltrate a piece of the soil with a standardized plunger. The readings are used to detect any drawbacks in the soil structure and appropriately rectify the problem.

The process

A plunger of standard measurements is used to penetrate the soil, and the pressure required to do so is measured and recorded. A standard crushed rock is also penetrated to equal measure, and the pressure required is again recorded. The pressure required to penetrate the soil is then divided by the pressure required to penetrate the crushed rock. Usually, CBR tests are conducted in multiples of 3 on each site to maintain accuracy.

The CBR value of the surfaces varies based on its rigidity. The resistance to clay is usually up to 2 percent. Sand displays the strength of up to 10 percent, whereas a sub-base with high density will have an 80 to 100 percent firmness. The CBR test is used to detect these levels and determine if the soil is suitable for construction.

The CBR test is a cost-effective method as it can be conducted with simple, portable tools. These tests were primarily designed to be used on-site to test subgrades. However, it has evolved into testing other materials on-site as well as in laboratories. The methods used in the laboratory differ immensely from the methods used in the field. It is recommended to run the tests multiple times to deduce the tested materials' CBR values accurately.
