How Can A Slump Test Be Beneficial?

A concrete slump test measures the consistency of the material in a specific batch to determine the consistency, workability, and texture of the freshly made concrete. In a slump test, consistency determines the ease with which the material can flow. Hence, the test can help indicate the degree of wetness. Testing lets you determine the workability of the concrete, where wetter concrete is more workable compared to a drier mix, although the one with similar consistency can vary in its workability. The test can be used to determine the consistency of different batches of concrete, too.

To conduct a slump test, you need materials like the slump cone, base plate, slump funnel, a tamping rod, a ruler, and a mallet. The simplicity of these devices makes slump testing cost-effective in determining the workability of fresh concrete. In a test, the slump cone must be filled in layers, and each later will be compacted with the rod. The cone is then taken away and the vertical drop of the concrete will be measured when it is not confined any more. Modern slum testing sets come with all the materials you will need to conduct the test while making sure that they meet the AS 1012.3.1 and EN 12350-2 standards.

Some slump testing sets are designed for high workability concrete mixes to measure the flow index by calculating the average sample diameter when it is permitted to flow. This time, the test set comes with a flow table that measures 700 x 700mm and hinged at one side to a lower table. The topmost table has inscriptions, and all parts of the set are treated to resist corrosion. The set comes with a stainless steel flow cone and a wooden tamper, too.

Slumped concrete will have various shapes. The profile or appearance of the slump concrete will determine the results, which are often labelled as true slump, collapse slump, and shear slump. Collapse occurs when the mix is too wet. When a collapse or shear slump occurs, the test must be repeated with a fresh sample, and it must be repeated until a true slump is achieved.
