Know About the Schmidt Hammer – A Device to Concrete Consistency and Strength

The Schmidt hammer is a device that measures the strength and elastic properties of rock or concrete using the rebound technique, which correlates the surface hardness with the strength of concrete. The device was invented by a Swiss engineer, Ernst Schmidt, and the hammer is widely used around the world by engineers and construction specialists for quality assurance. The Schmidt hammer is also known as a 'rebound hammer' and 'concrete test hammer', and it comes in different types. Here is an overview of some of them:

  • Original Schmidt hammer - The commonly used model is the original or classic Schmidt concrete test hammer, which is equipped with a mechanical gauge to measure the rebound value of the test impact. Correlation of this rebound value R is an effective non-destructive estimate of concrete's compressive strength (within 25%) and also a very good measure of the uniformity of concrete quality. 
  • Silver Schmidt hammer – This latest version of the device comes in both L and N configurations to estimate the strength of concrete. It has two notable advantages over the classic version: (1) It measures the quotient of the impact speeds rather than the rebound. This increases the sensitivity to make the hammer test possible between 10 and 100MPa. Moreover, it is not affected by gravity, making it useful in 360-degree operations without corrections. (2) It is lightweight and digital, and it can perform all computations internally, you can get the results immediately and have a record for later review. 
  • Rock Schmidt – This rebound hammer is specifically designed for rock testing. It is suitable for both core sample and field testing and it supports data logging. 

  • Paper Schmidt – This hammer is designed for testing film roll hardness. It uses a new measuring principle and a compliant plunger for accurate roll profiling and repeatability. Its longer service life makes it ideal to the demands in the paper industry. Dedicated tools like pre-defined tolerances simplify profile assessments, too.
